Events, Projects & Programs

Members of the Santa Monica Jaycees participate in over 70 events each year, making a great impact on the community as well as themselves. There truly is something for everyone.

Following is a sampling of our projects. View the CALENDAR to see upcoming events. To learn more about any of our events, including leadership and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Carrie Spencer, President.

Adopt-An-Angel (Toys for Tots)
Each November, Jaycees collect toys, which are wrapped, collected, and then delivered to a local charity who distributes them to children in need.

Adopt-A-Family
The Santa Monica Jaycees Adopt-A-Family project enlists volunteers to help give some holiday cheer to families in need . With funds  raised throughout the year, volunteers buy, wrap, and deliver toys, clothes, food, and household items to help make the Holidays a time to remember for ten families in the Los Angeles area.

Auto Show on 3rd St. Promenade
Each year, typically in October, the Jaycees operate the Santa Monica Auto show, where local car dealers showcase the new models for the upcoming year on Third Street Promenade.
.

Distinguished Service Award (DSA)
First presented by the Santa Monica Jaycees in the 1930s, the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) has been awarded to many accomplished community leaders of today.  It honors a young person (between the ages of 21 and 39) for his or her service and contribution to the quality of life within the community of Santa Monica.
Candidates are nominated for this distinguished award by Santa Monica service organizations and community groups. Each year, the award is presented at a luncheon hosted by a local service organization.  Past hosts have included Santa Monica Rotary Club, Santa Monica Kiwanis, Santa Monica Lions Club, and Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, among others.

General Meeting
The second Monday of each month, the Jaycees meet to conduct their general membership meetings. The meeting usually lasts 1 1/2 hours and includes the following: committee reports, updates, special announcements, swearing in of new members, and a featured guest speaker on a topic relevant to the general membership.

Haunted House
Forget Knott's Scary Farm!  Each year, the Jaycees partner with the Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club to make the Club the scariest place in Santa Monica on Halloween!  Our volunteers help build and staff a Haunted House suitable for ghost, goblins, and other things that go bump in the night.

Huck Finn Day
A Santa Monica tradition for over fifty years, Huck Finn Day provides children of the Santa Monica area the opportunity to fish for live trout in a local park - virtually right in their own backyard!  In addition to fishing, children can participate in pie eating contests, three-legged races, and other games.  Huck Finn Day is traditionally held on a Saturday morning in June - usually the day before Father's Day.

I Love Santa Monica Gala
The "I Love Santa Monica" Dinner Gala is one of the largest and most important community events hosted by the Santa Monica Jaycees. The evening of the Gala, the Outstanding Young Police Officer, Firefighter, and Educator of the Year are honored for their exceptional dedication to service. In addition to receiving a very unique award from the Jaycees, each of the award recipients receives recognition from the city, county, and state officials.

Past Presidents Dinner
A dinner held to create goodwill and keep lines of communication open between past Jaycee presidents and the current Board of Directors. In recent years, the event was expanded to include all general members for this informative and enjoyable evening.

Peter Rabbit Day
The Jaycees sponsor an annual Easter Egg Hunt held at Douglas Park in Santa Monica. The event is free for Children between the ages of 1-11 years. In addition to the Easter Egg Hunt, there is music, clowns, police and firemen as well as a special guest appearance by the Easter Bunny!

Progressive Dinner
Each fall, the Jaycees get together for appetizers & drinks at one home, dinner at another, and dessert at still another.  This is an ideal time for Jaycees to get to know each other or catch each other up before the Holiday craze sets in.

Project Echo
Project ECHO (Entrepreneurial Concepts Hands-On) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization based in Santa Monica, California. The Organization's goal is to provide innovative and effective classroom-based opportunities for diverse groups of high school students to learn about the free market economy. Project ECHO students apply the knowledge and skills they gain through academic and experiential means to their own on-campus enterprises. Proceeds generated through the student run businesses are distributed to the students in the form of scholarships. The Santa Monica Jaycees have helped staff the the Project ECHO Summit as well as participate in the Take An ECHO Student to Work Day, among other activities.

Volleyball
"Team Jaycees" competes against other organizations here in Santa Monica. Weekly games allow for friendly competition against the Rotary, YMCA's Men and other local clubs. In the summer we play beach volleyball, too. Come join us for a lot of fun!

Other Chapters' Events
There are over 40 Jaycee chapters in California. Members of the Santa Monica Jaycees can take advantage of much of what other chapters have to offer in addition to the benefits the Santa Monica Jaycees provide.  The types of events range from social gatherings to business & personal growth trainings to district & statewide meetings and community service opportunities. Contact Carrie Spencer for more specific information.
